FAQs

The Association for Home Education Assessors (AHEA) is a professional body that supports home education assessors in South Africa. Our role is to promote credible, competent, and accountable assessment practices for home-educated learners.

AHEA sets consistent standards for professional practice, competence, and ethical behaviour among assessors. We provide resources and support for assessors to maintain and improve their skills.

Educational attainment refers to the knowledge, understanding, skills, and competencies demonstrated by a learner through various forms of assessment evidence, not merely grades or completion of work.

Parents should maintain an organized portfolio that includes significant learning evidence such as written work, projects, tests, and any other relevant assessments that demonstrate a learner's educational progress.

Home-educated learners are not strictly required to follow the CAPS curriculum. However, their educational attainment must be assessed against standards that are not inferior to those set in the National Curriculum Statement.

A competent assessor should provide clear explanations of their qualifications, the assessment process, and ensure their judgments are evidence-based, fair, and unbiased while adhering to professional ethics.
